The houses in Chesham

Chesham runs from old cottages and Victorian terraces along the valley floor up to interwar and postwar estates on the hills, with larger detached houses in the lanes beyond.

The older houses in the town have thick walls that are nowhere near straight and ceilings that drop as you cross the room, so anything flat-backed stands proud at one end. Up on the estates it is the familiar chimney breast with a recess either side.

Chesham sits at the end of the Metropolitan line in the Chess valley, and the difference between a town-centre cottage and a house up on Hilltop is about a century of building.

That is the point of building rather than buying. A wardrobe made for the room goes to the ceiling, into the alcove and up to the skirting, and the awkward bits of the house become storage instead of dead air.

What we build in Chesham

  • Fitted wardrobes, hinged, sliding or walk-in
  • Alcove cupboards and shelving either side of a chimney breast
  • Understairs storage, media walls and fitted desks
  • Kitchen units and islands built to fit
  • Wall panelling, doors hung and eased, flooring laid
  • First and second fix for builders and other trades

Covering HP5 and the surrounding streets. Travel is included in the price.

Built for the room, not bought for it

Every job starts the same way: someone comes out, measures the room as it really is, and prices the work. Walls are never quite straight and floors are never quite level, so the parts are made to suit what is actually there and scribed in on site.

That is the difference between a wardrobe that fits a Chesham bedroom and one that fits a catalogue.

Max at Barraclough Carpentry built a bespoke wardrobe for me, and I’m really pleased with the result. He was professional and easy to deal with throughout, and the team he brought along were excellent too. I’d happily recommend them.

Chesham questions

Do you cover all of Chesham?

Yes, the whole of HP5 and the streets around it. Travel is included in the price, so there is no mileage charge wherever in the area you are.

Do the wardrobes need painting?

Mostly not. What we fit is usually MFC, which arrives already finished in the colour you picked, so there is nothing to paint and nothing to re-coat later. If a job is built out of MDF and you want it painted, we bring a painter in.

Will the house be full of dust?

There is no such thing as no dust, but there is a lot of difference between a tidy job and a messy one. We sheet up, cut in one place where we can, and clear the room at the end of every day.

Do you work on flats in Chesham as well as houses?

Yes. Flats are often where a fitted wardrobe earns its keep the most, because the rooms are the most awkward and there is the least floor to spare.
