The houses in St Albans

A cathedral city with a medieval core, streets of Victorian terraces around the centre and the station, 1930s suburbs beyond them and postwar estates further out.

The Victorian terraces are the common job: narrow rooms, a chimney breast with recesses either side, and often a loft conversion with sloping ceilings where nothing bought will fit at all.

Large parts of the centre are conservation area, so work in the older houses is as much about what you leave alone as what you add.

That is the point of building rather than buying. A wardrobe made for the room goes to the ceiling, into the alcove and up to the skirting, and the awkward bits of the house become storage instead of dead air.

Built for the room, not bought for it

Every job starts the same way: someone comes out, measures the room as it really is, and prices the work. Walls are never quite straight and floors are never quite level, so the parts are made to suit what is actually there and scribed in on site.

That is the difference between a wardrobe that fits a St Albans bedroom and one that fits a catalogue.

What people say

Max at Barraclough Carpentry built a bespoke wardrobe for me, and I’m really pleased with the result. He was professional and easy to deal with throughout, and the team he brought along were excellent too. I’d happily recommend them.

St Albans questions

Do you cover all of St Albans?

Yes, the whole of AL1, AL3, AL4 and the streets around it. Travel is included in the price, so there is no mileage charge wherever in the area you are.

Can you build around a chimney breast in a St Albans house?

That is the most common job there is. An alcove either side of a breast is exactly the shape nothing off a shelf will fit, and exactly the shape a built-in cupboard is for.

Do the wardrobes need painting?

Mostly not. What we fit is usually MFC, which arrives already finished in the colour you picked, so there is nothing to paint and nothing to re-coat later. If a job is built out of MDF and you want it painted, we bring a painter in.

Will the house be full of dust?

There is no such thing as no dust, but there is a lot of difference between a tidy job and a messy one. We sheet up, cut in one place where we can, and clear the room at the end of every day.
